New Year, Now What?

pic-happynewyear

Do you get energized by the fresh start that the New Year brings?

Do you stress over all of your failed resolutions?

Do you prefer auld acquaintance be forgot and never brought to mind?

The New York Post recently published a study conducted by Strava, the social network for athletes (originally published by news.com.au), stating “Saturday, January 12 is the fateful day of New Year’s resolutions.”  That’s right, after analyzing more than 31.5 million online global activities, Strava was able to pinpoint the date when most people report failing their resolution.

So, if you’ve made it this far, congratulations!  You have outlasted 31.5 million other people!

Already broken your 2019 resolutions?  Don’t sweat it, you’re in good company (in fact, that room is starting to getting a little crowded)!

It does make us wonder, does our dedication to resolutions change as we get older?

Do we have different feelings as we transition from generation to generation?

Karen (F’ing Fifties):

I love a new year, the anticipation and excitement, the soft glow of the lights, that wonderful distinctive scent . . . oh, wait, that’s not a new year, that’s a new car. I do love the smell of a new car, can’t really say that about a New Year, well, except for that time I rang in the new year in New Orleans. If I close my eyes (and go to a bakery), I can still smell the sweet, sweet scent of freshly baked beignets.  Unfortunately, that was followed by the smell of stale beer and bad decisions, but, that’s a story for another time.

I’ve never been one to make resolutions but I do happen to have a New Years Eve item on my Bucket List: Watch the ball drop, live, in Times Square on NYE. Of course, I plan on doing this from the window of my hotel room, with room service, a roaring fire (or at least a fire streaming on my TV) and indoor plumbing. I mean, I’m not crazy, I am not going to wait for 16 hours in the freezing cold, amongst one million strangers, who, by the way, are most likely wearing (and taking full advantage of) diapers. Who does that? That sounds awful!

You know what does not sound awful? Resolutions. I think this year will be the year that I make one, it’s not too late is it?

This year I resolve to bake more. Can anyone recommend a wine that pairs well with beignets?

Brooke (60-Something Baby Boomer):

Oh! The holiday season is nigh! With eggnog and cookies and pie.

The calories mount, my cholesterol count

Is as high as an elephant’s eye.

And now it is twenty nineteen. My lunch is a third of a bean.

But by 1/31, I’ll be back having fun and my waist goes forever unseen.

Lindsay (Fabulous Forties):

Happy New Year!  Happy same ole me!

I am in my late 40s.  I am my worst enemy but with age comes acceptance.   I strive to be a better version of myself, but I also accept not much is gonna change.

I am blessed with my family and friends and thankful for all the great on my life.

So blog readers . . . Eat, Drink and be Merry ALL year!!!   It’s not just for holidays you know.

  1. To answer your query about age affecting one’s dedication to keeping resolutions—it sure does! Retirement has brought a whole new “what the hell” attitude into play, but this compulsive list-maker still enjoys pretending to turn over some new leaves. Another fun column, ladies!

    1. I love a good list and the “what the hell” attitude is one of the things I look forward to most about retirement!

  2. I love to make resolutions, it’s like a fresh start. Of course, I typically break them sometime around Valentines Day but, after reading your blog, I feel better knowing I typically last longer than most. Can’t wait to celebrate my achievement!

    1. We will consider this our contribution to your success and will celebrate on your behalf. . .Cheers!

  3. I made no resolutions!! I know better. I’m lucky to stick to a diet. The blog was a good read ladies keep it up. I enjoy reading it. K

    1. Thank you, Happy New Year!

  4. My resolution this year is to not make any more resolutions….EVER AGAIN!!!
And Karen, would love to hear the rest of that New Orleans story!
