Julie Andrews shared “a few of her favorite things” via song (you’re trying to sing it right now, aren’t you)? Well, we thought we’d try to do this as well, except we can’t sing. Ok, technically we can sing, but not well. Instead, we thought we’d try the more modern approach and list our favorite childhood things in 140 characters or less.
Spoiler Alert: For those of you keeping score, most of us could not do this in 140 characters or less (it’s harder than one might think), but, we came close.
These were a few of our favorite things:
Lindsay (Fabulous Forties) – Some of my favorite 70’s things:
I loved Little Dogs, cutting oranges w/my dad for soccer games, going to the beach, hanging with friends, hanging at the pool, shopping w/ my mom, keds.
Karen (F’ing Fifties) – Some of My Favorite 70’s things:
Bonne Bell Bubble Gum Lip Smacker, Etch-A-Sketch, EZ Bake Oven, Barbie Hair Styling Head (in retrospect-so creepy) Sears Christmas Wish Book
Brooke (60-Something Baby Boomer) – Some of my favorite 60’s things:
Camp Windego summers, swim team, watching fireworks from our backyard, horses, sidewalk chalk art. Brand new school supplies and Easter outfits. My life-size doll and original Barbie. Always safe and loved.
Amanda (30-Something Millennial) – Some of my favorite 80’s things:
Going to the pool in the Summer. Eating frozen Snickers. American Girl books. Watching Alf, Fraggle Rock. Wanting to be Punky Brewster or Jem! Spandex pants (or shorts) with my New Kids on the Block t-shirt and neon slap bracelets.

I wish I could time travel back to the 50’s/60’s to see if it was really as wonderful as I remember. What a fun topic you’ve chosen! Bike riding, sledding, swimming, playing ball with my 4 brothers, Mickey Mouse Club and Three Stooges, sleepovers with Grandma (Lawrence Welk and scrabble), sleepovers with friends (screaming and giggling all night). And I, unlike my brothers, dearly loved the excitement of a new school year!
This just took me back to the wonderful summers spent with my Grandma. Although our sleepovers were in the 70s, we still had one thing in common: watching Lawrence Welk! Thank you for sharing your trip down memory lane (and possibly inspiring a future blog topic: time travel)!

The orange & green room sounds intriguing, but not as intriguing as the midnight sneaking! And, you’re character count is only 106. that means you have 34 characters left to elaborate 🙂
Streaking was the in thing
Judy – Oh, I am so much older but still remember the 50’s! Roller skating, jump rope, tag, hop scotch, hide and seek, Girl Scouts, Myrtle Beach visits with Krispy Kreme truck.
Great memories, sounds like a wonderful childhood!
I really do miss those simpler days. These days I pay a trainer $30 an hour to watch me jump rope because of all of the Krispy Kremes!
What about hula hoops in the 50’s and Heavenly Cologne in the 60’s?
I was always so envious of hula-hoopers, it continues to be an epic fail for me. This did remind me of another favorite outdoor accessory, the pogo stick. Good times!
My fave things as a kid in under 140 characters: Everything, except being grounded. And broccoli. Adulting is hard (but this wasn’t 🙂

Well done, ladies. But I have to go back to the fifties. Is that allowed? Hope so, because here they are: going to the beach every day in the summer; dodgeball; roller skating; playing jacks; jump rope; paper dolls, and Karen, I also looked forward to the Sears Christmas catalog
The fifties sounded fantastic! How could I have forgotten about roller skating?? It was a 70s highlight for me! It also confirms that, although we all grew up in different decades, our experiences were not so different. Thank you!
I remember spending hours upon hours over multiple weekends scouring the Wish Book making sure I didn’t miss a thing before putting together that all important list for Santa!
And did Santa bring you what you had on your wish list?
Sometimes, still holding out hope for the Barbie Dream House, lol!
